Watch out for the Tallinn Medieval days over the weekend

For a few days, the Estonian capital’s Old Town is transformed into a medieval Hanseatic city

Yesterday evening, on 11 July, the Tallinn Medieval Days were officially opened at the Viru Gates, with the ceremony happening at the Town Hall Square. Attendees were greeted with traditional concerts, dances and other performances, carried out by world renowned artists whose sole task was to help visitors travel back in time.

If you decide to take a look for yourselves, don’t miss the medieval village that sprung up near the Niguliste church. Over there you will find a medieval knight school for children, sword fighting lessons, many workshops dedicated to centuries-old crafts and many competitions – such as shooting with a bow. You’ll also find true artisans performing their daily tasks – blacksmiths, carpenters and architects.

For the first time ever, the square before Catherine’s Church will be filled with workshops as well. Here however, you’ll encounter presenters talking about the role of sciences in Medieval times – herbalism and alchemy for example. You’ll also find historians – experts on the church’s history.

Over the course of the Medieval Days there are constant performances aiming to drown you in history – all of them faithful to the historical accuracy of the times they are presenting. You can check out the full programme of the event over at its website.
