Wax figure of German Chancellor Merkel unveiled in Berlin

Even before the end of her time as German chancellor, Angela Merkel can be seen in a new leisure look at Madame Tussauds in Berlin.

The Berlin waxwork museum presented the outgoing chancellor on Thursday in front of the Reichstag building with a backpack, casual checked shirt and hiking trousers - after all, "Angela Merkel's time in wax as chancellor" is coming to an end, the museum announced.

From Sunday, visitors will be able to view the newly dressed wax figure, the museum said. It replaces a suit-wearing Merkel in a business-like pose, hands folded in her trademark "rhombus of power" gesture.

Meanwhile, Madame Tussauds is already preparing for the new era after the September 26 election to decide Merkel's successor.

"In the coming week, we will send out requests to all the candidates for chancellor," said Nadja Troublefield, the head of the wax museum.

The future chancellor should then also get a wax double as soon as possible, she added.
