80% of the land of Athienou has been occupied by the Turkish army since 1974, due to the Turkish invasion in Cyprus. Even in its isolation, the city is trying to maintain its identity and develop.    

Since 1926 Athienou is a municipality and it is one of the oldest in Cyprus.

Athienou is a small town in Cyprus of around 6.500 inhabitants.

It has an elected Mayor and 8 Board members who are elected every 5 years. There is a 20 member staff in the Municipality that works for the benefit of the citizens. 

Athienou has been declared a Good Practice City for its volunteerism by the European URBACT Program. Four Volunteering Programs are functioning in the city and the Municipality is the Lead Partner of a Transfer Network co-financed by ERDF that will transfer its good practices to 7 other European cities.

Agricultural and livestock activities are still some of the main occupations of the inhabitants. The city also has an industrial zone and many other enterprises and services.The city is also well-known for its traditional products, such as bread, diary products, wedding pastries, traditional lace and many others. On the first Sunday of October, every year a Pancyprian Festival of the products of Athienou is organized with big success and with numerous visitors from Cyprus and abroad.

TOURISM

A must visit in Athienou are:

  • Kallinikeio Municipal Museum;
  • the restored old house of the famous monk Kallinikos, where visitors can see the production of the Cyprus cheese halloumi;
  • the renovated old flourmill;
  • the great churhes with the sandals of saint Spyridon and bones of the holy man Saint Fokas;
  • the ancient place of Malloura.
