Mayor of Haapsalu is Urmas Sukles. He was born on 26 November 1958.
In 1982 he graduated from the University of Tartu's Faculty of Medicine as a Therapist – GP. In 2005 he graduated from the Faculty of Business Administration of the same university.
Between 1982 until 1985 Sukles worked at the Kullamaa parish hospital as a therapist and until 1993 he served as a deputy chief doctor of the Haapsalu District hospital.
From 1993 to 2002, Mr Sukles was mayor of Haapsalu. After that, he was chairman of the board of the Heal ltd., Delegatsioon Ltd. (Fra Mare Spa Hotel- Haapsalu; Pirita Top Spa Hotel-Tallinn). He has served as mayor of Haapsalu continuously ever since his re-election in 2009.
From 2013 until 2020, Mr Sukles was also a Member of the EU’s Committee of the Regions, now serving as an alternate member.
