The municipality of Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero was formed as a result of the 2010 local government reform, following the merger of the former municipalities of Agioi Anagyroi and Kamatero, with the latter two being turned into smaller municipal units.
Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero is a municipality located in the West Athens regional unit of Attica in Greece. It has a population of 54,000 according to the 2011 census with the real population being estimated at 70-80,000. The seat of the municipality is the town Agioi Anargyroi.
A key feature of the Municipality of Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero is that it lies at the crossroads of several major transport routes. That is why accessing the Municipality from the center of Athens is both quick and easy.
The Municipality of Agioi Anargyri - Kamaterou mainly encompasses residential areas, without large industrial or other facilities. In the center of the Municipality one can find the historic shopping centers of Agioi Anargyroi and Kamatero where all public services are located.
One of Agioi Anargyri’s most important landmarks is the preserved Peisistratus Olive Tree - a tree proven to be over 25 centuries old. Tales and traditions state that the tree is somehow related to the ancient tyrant of Athens Peisistratus. It has been declared a natural history monument and the Municipality wants it to become the centre of a protected green, promenade and recreation area, unified with the nearby Pefkona area.
The area of today's municipality boasts a rich history dating back to Antiquity. In the center of Kamateros town as well as in the Gerovounos area, one can find important archaeological finds including graves and houses. Within the boundaries of Agioi Anargyroi there are also a series of churches dating back to the post-Byzantine period, at the time of the 1st Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. These are also numerous temples.
