Local administration and industry in three lighthouse cities join forces for the implementation of 12 practical solutions mitigating the effects of urbanization
“GrowSmarter: transforming cities for a smart, sustainable Europe” is a project that brings together cities and industry for demonstrating and integrating solutions aimed to reduce the environmental footprint related to urbanization. GrowSmarter demonstrates 12 smart city solutions in the fields of energy, infrastructure and transport, which shall serve as a valuable insight into what cities can do in practice to improve their energy efficiency and environmental protection results.
The project implementation looks like this: three Lighthouse cities (Stockholm, Cologne and Barcelona) will implement the 12 smart solutions, thereby showing how other cities can uptake them. Five follower Cities - Valetta, Suceava, Porto, Cork and Graz shall closely follow the implementation and replicate according to their local contexts.
The solutions are split equally into three domains: Low energy districts, Integrated infrastructures and Sustainable Urban Mobility. For each solution, several practical examples are given, together with accompanying context, detailed description, expected impact and the potential for replication.
The 46 examples go from smart refurbishement and equipment, energy efficient swimming pools, home energy management and improved pricing models, through big data management, automatization of waste collection and connectivity, to smarter charging infrastructure, renewable fuels or car sharing options.
The project has received 25 million euro in funding through the Horizon 2020 programme by the European Union and lasts between 1st January 2015 and 31st December 2019.
