The current Lord Mayor of Cork is Mr John Sheehan. He has been a member of Cork City Council since 2014. On the evening of his inauguration, Sheelan has stated that one of his priorities will be connecting communities, as the expanded area of Cork city now includes new areas - Blarney, Kerry Pike, Glanmire, Ballincollig, among others and 85 000 extra persons.
Having graduated with a Doctorate in Medicine (Epidemiology and Public Health), he also has a Diploma in Medicine of the Elderly DME and Diploma in Child Health DCH. Between 1996 and 1999 he worked as a General Practitioner in New York and since 2003 he has been working in Blackpool as a GP.
Apart from holding the position of Mayor, he is a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners MICGP and of the Royal College of General Practitioners RCGP. In addition, Sheehan is Assistant Programme Director in the Cork Vocational Training Scheme, UCC, Chairperson of the Board of Management of Mount Cara.
He is passionate about running, having taken part in 8 marathons in the city so far. When it comes to medicine, he has extensive expertise and publications in Cardiovascular Disease, Medical Education, Diabetes, Elderly Care and Determinates of Health.
