In 2000, he became deputy city manager of Leiderdorp and a year later he became city manager of Wormerland. In late 2004, he was appointed mayor of the municipality of Niedorp and from 16 September 2009 until 2015 he was the mayor of Velsen. Since September 2015, he has been the mayor of Almere.
