Mayor of Vila Franca de Xira is Alberto Mesquita. He was born on 26 August 1949 in Angola. He has been living in Alverca do Ribatejo since 1974. Married, father of two children and grandfather of two granddaughters and a grandson.
Mr Mesquita has worked for several companies in the private sector, such as the former MAGUE in Alverca do Ribatejo, as a Technical Designer.
Adept at sports, he has practiced several disciplines, especially rugby at Sport Lisboa e Benfica. He was also a rugby training coach.
Mr Mesquita joined the Socialist Party in 1985, and has since held various positions in the party, namely President of the political council of Vila Franca de Xira and of the National Commission, to which he currently belongs.
He was a city councillor in Vila Franca de Xira between 1994 and 1998. From 1998 to 2013 he was a full-time city councillor, and between 2009 and 2013 he was vice-president of the City Council.
Mr Mesquita has been Mayor of Vila Franca de Xira since 2013 and is currently serving his second term until 2021. He is also currently a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities.
