Mayor of Zalău is Ionel Ciunt. Former prefect of Sălaj county, in June 2016 he received the confidence of the citizens of the municipality and was voted mayor, thus assuming the responsibility of transforming Zalău into a truly European city. Ciunt is a member of the Social Democratic Party.
