All Saints Day in Finland and Sweden

All Saints Day in Finland and Sweden

Here in the North, it always falls on Saturday

All Saints Day in Finland and Sweden is a national holiday that has both religious and traditional significance. It is only since the 1950s that the countries mark the day on a Saturday which falls between 31 October and 6 November.

It is a tradition for families to visit the graves of their dead relatives and leave lit candles there in commemoration. That last ritual is also fairly recent – it started in the cities after World War I when people wanted to honour the fallen soldiers.
