This year, Turku will brighten up the dark winter season with “The Path of Light”: a 10,000-steps-long path surrounded by light installations and various cultural activities. The Finnish City will organise and implement the event as part of the Centre Development flagship project and the 2021 programme for the 10th anniversary of Turku’s European Capital of Culture year (2011).

Inspired by the city

The City of Turku and the artists who will showcase their work have reportedly sought inspiration for The Path of Light in Turku itself. More specifically, the light installations will reflect the stories, cityscape, and atmosphere of the Finnish city.

The event will start on the first weekend of December, when visitors and citizens will have the opportunity to see as many as 14 different light installations. In addition to this, there will be a rich programme consisting of a puppet theatre, circus, fire art, and others.

Although the city will showcase the most impressive installations and cultural events between 3 and 6 December, the Path of Light will remain open to the public until the end of January 2022.

What can visitors see?

The Path of Light will feature both famous installations by internationally known artists and work that has never before been displayed. Expanding on this, Amanda Parer will showcase Intrude: a light installation of large rabbits, highlighting the relationship between man and nature. Furthermore, the City of Turku will also display Alexander Reichstein’s They were here: a work featuring human figures and exploring the idea that people never truly disappear but instead, leave a lasting mark on the world.

Aside from these works, one will have the opportunity to see Flowers of Life, Blue Atmosphere, Red Project, Tapio’s Hall, The Children’s Planet, Magical Garden, and the Journey to the History of Turku, among others. To view photographs of the light installations, see the gallery above.
