Nobody in Denmark will have to spend the holidays alone this year

The Danish Red Cross and the digital meeting place Boblberg are helping lonely people find friends for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve

For some people, the holiday season can be the most difficult time of the year. While many see it as a chance to come together with the ones they love, others experience it as a sad time that reminds them they are all alone. With this in mind, two Danish organisations have joined forces to prevent loneliness this season.

More specifically, the Danish Red Cross and the digital meeting place Boblberg have launched two initiatives that seek to bring people together on Christmas Eve and New Years’ Eve.

Choose to be a host or guest

People who do not have someone to spend the holidays with can now make an account on julevenner.dk and find company for this special time of the year. What is more, they can decide whether they want to be a Christmas host or a guest.

Expanding on these options, Boblberg notes that there are many reasons why one might want to be a Christmas host. Taking a case in point, they may be interested in sharing Danish Christmas traditions with other cultures. Alternatively, they may simply wish to meet new people.

Guests, on the other hand, can be students, expatriates, or refugees. Of course, they can also just be people who lack contact with friends and family.

Welcome the new year with someone new

The second initiative is similar to the first as it seeks to help people find company for New Year’s Eve. To organise a plan on nytaarsvenner.dk, one must first register by selecting their municipality so that they can find friends in their area.

Danish cities are now promoting these two initiatives, with Vallensbæk Municipality sharing that no one deserves to feel alone during this special time of the year.
