Paris 2024 'starts' this weekend

The French capital marks the symbolic start of the 2024 Olympics with a free concert on 8 August

Paris is getting ready to receive the Olympic torch from Tokyo in a special ceremony this Sunday, 8 August. The long-awaited gesture marks the symbolic end of Tokyo 2020 Olympic games and sets the wheels in motion for Paris 2024. The French capital will mark the occasion with a free concert in the Trocadéro gardens and a broadcast from Tokyo.

Goodbye Tokyo 2020, hello Paris 2024

This Sunday might be a sad day for sports fans worldwide, as it puts the end to weeks of intense competitions and many occasions of national pride, when the Tokyo 2020 Olympics come to a close. However, for Parisians, it is only the beginning of a long journey of intense preparations for the next summer Olympic games that the city will host from 26 July to 11 August 2024.

To mark this, Paris informs that it is organising, in the Gardens of the Trocadéro, a live broadcast from the games in Tokyo, including the handover of the Olympic torch from the current to the future host city. On a giant screen, Parisian residents and guests will be able to follow live the official closing ceremony from 13:00 onwards, featuring the President of Paris 2024 Committee Tony Estanguet in the presence of the French medallists.

The closing ceremony will end with a 12-minute artistic performance offered by Paris 2024, thus establishing a link with the next Olympics. At the same time in Paris, the flag of the new Games will be hoisted at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

The festivities will conclude with a free concert of Woodkid at the Trocadéro Games Live. The electro artist, who composed the music for the transition to Paris 2024, will hold a free concert at the foot of the Eiffel Tower starting at 15:15.

Anyone with a health pass could visit Trocadéro Games Live, within the limit of the site's capacity and under the condition of wearing a mask. The site opens at 11:00 and the entrance is through Warsaw Square - Trocadero Gardens.
