Much like everywhere else in Europe, the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Warsaw will be different, due to the social isolation incurred by the coronavirus pandemic. To make up for the lack of fireworks display and concerts on stage, the capital of Poland is preparing a spectacular light show, which will allow citizens to welcome 2021 from the comfort and safety of their homes.
Forced to cancel huge stage performances, involving world-class stars and spectacular laser shows, as has been the case in the past, Warsaw will be offering a no less thrilling experience in the eve of 2021. The decision, made earlier in September, was naturally caused by the unstable pandemic situation throughout the country and the existing ban on public gatherings.
For this reason, the city authorities opted for a safer alternative, involving a lights show displayed on the facade of the impressive Palace of Culture, that can be watched from windows and balconies, but also on the Internet.
The highest and most recognisable building in Warsaw which today welcomes theatres, cinema, museums and pubs, will be lit just before midnight. The sky above it will be adorned with lights designed so as to be visible from almost every corner of the city.
A concert, involving competitions with prizes is also awaiting the online viewers. Warsaw residents are therefore encouraged to carefully follow the Facebook profiles of Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and Stołeczna Estrada for the latest information available.
Another important aspect of the New Year celebration will be the lack of pyrotechnics. Similarly to other EU cities, the Mayor of Warsaw decided that as of 2018 the city will not use them to celebrate the arrival of a new year, and the city appeals to residents to refrain from setting up their own fireworks displays, as they are harmful to the environment and especially to animals.
