14 underground bins to be installed in Pilea-Hortiatis

This new system will replace 100 bins, make the city cleaner, and enhance the residents’ quality of life

The Greek Municipality of Pilea-Hortiatis will upgrade its urban landscape and become more environmentally friendly with the installation of 14 underground bins. The city’s project was approved by the Green Fund Network which will allocate over EUR 200,000 for its implementation.

Characteristics

Speaking to the municipality, the Deputy Mayor of Cleaning, Environment and Recycling Giannis Kartalis explained that the containers will be 2.5 metres deep and that they will each have a capacity of 3 cubic metres.

Moreover, they will be equipped with a special lifting mechanism so that they can emerge from the ground. In addition to this, hydraulic cranes will be installed on the municipal garbage trucks so that they can easily collect the waste stored by the bins.

What are the benefits?

The installation of these underground waste containers will provide numerous advantages to the municipality, its residents and environment.

Taking this further, as a result of the large capacity which can be stored by these new containers, the municipality will be able to remove one hundred bins from the city. In turn, this will improve the quality of life of the city’s residents and aesthetically upgrade the urban landscape of Pilea-Hortiatis.

Furthermore, storing waste underground contributes to creating a city that is cleaner and more environmentally friendly. This ensures that residents will have minimal contact with substances and odours that may be harmful to their overall health and wellbeing. Therefore, it significantly enhances the living conditions of the city’s inhabitants.

It is interesting to note that Pilea-Hortiatis had also installed semi-underground waste bins a decade ago. This action, according to the municipality, made the city a "pioneer nationwide". Now, these containers will continue to operate alongside the new, underground bins. Thus, the Greek municipality demonstrates its clear dedication and commitment to protecting its inhabitants and the environment.
