New approaches to arranging plants with the goal of creating various visual effects

The City of Alicante has decided to freshen up the visual image of its parks and gardens through the implementation of new floral arrangements and plant landscaping. This will involve redesigning the flowerbeds and shrubs in the main points of interest in the city. In charge of maintenance, the municipal Green Zones Department is applying a technique known as ‘mixed borders’, which combines the placement of flowers, bushes and trees in a way that creates a layered and more natural effect.

Following recent tendencies in park landscaping

The mixed flowerbeds are designed with a larger structural plant serving as the axis, and around it, a combination of both species and colours is made. In fact, this allows some of the plants placed in previous years to be maintained with only the seasonal flowers needing to be replenished.

If the structural plant is in the centre of the garden area, the other plants are placed around in layers from the highest to lowest height until, the so-called, upholstery species are planted. If, on the other hand, the main plant is next to a wall, the flower bed is structured in a wedge shape from the rear.

The application of this new landscaping technique gives a different aspect to the gardens to which we are accustomed and embellishes the spaces in which it is applied. The citizens and visitors of Alicante are already beginning to see it as they walk through areas such as Avenida Doctor Gadea, Plaza Luceros or Parque Canalejas, where this new floral and shrub architecture has already been applied to the flowerbeds,” explained Manuel Villar, Councillor for Environment.

For those who are interested in the botanical aspect of the plants, the Municipality reported that among the multitude of species one could spot four types of Begonias, five of Lantanas, two kinds of Lobularias, five types of Salvias, as well as Surfinias, Tagetes, Verbenas, Agapanthus and sugarcane.
