The programme targets young children whose parents cannot afford to stay home while school is closed
For many people, the summer season is a happy time associated with the closure of schools and the chance to go away on a family vacation. However, this is not the case for everyone as many single parents cannot afford to take time off from work and stay home with their children. What is more, many do not have the social support that would allow them to, for example, leave their children with their grandparents while they go to work.
Understanding that this is a big challenge for many, the Municipality of Athens has unveiled the ‘Cultural Summer Camp’, an innovative educational programme for children between the ages of 4 and 12. With this programme, 186 children will have the chance to ‘experience the cultural wealth of the city’ and socialise with other people.
A total of 9 cultural institutions will reportedly participate in the summer camp, allowing children to take part in a plethora of activities. These activities include art workshops, puppetry, dance, gymnastics, theatrical play, and storytelling. Furthermore, the Cultural Summer Camp will encourage children to learn about the environment, teaching them how to use recyclable materials and inviting them to take part in philanthropic activities.
“We are very happy that through this innovative educational programme, young Athenians are given the opportunity to work creatively in the summer, gaining valuable knowledge, experiences and smiles. It is equally important that through the programme, we offer a way out to single-parent families who do not have the necessary social and financial support so that they can work,” commented the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis.
Parents interested in enrolling their children can apply via athens.opensocialnet.gr by 31 May. The Cultural Summer Camp will begin next month and run until September.
