On 23 November, Athens officially marked the start of the festive season by lighting up the Christmas tree in Syntagma Square. The Greek capital brought joy to citizens, illuminating the 19-metre-high tree with over 60,000 lights. In addition to this, it also lit up the Greek parliament and the surrounding streets and buildings.
In a press release, Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis shared that this is the earliest that the capital has ever put up its decorations. Explaining the reason behind the early inauguration of the festive season, the mayor noted that it is part of the city’s efforts to leave behind the negative climate of the pandemic.
“At the same time, we want to contribute to the stimulation of the Athenian market, which has been suffering the consequences of the health crisis all the time. The focus of the lighting, as every year, is Syntagma Square; however, the Christmas atmosphere reaches from one end to the other in all the neighbourhoods and squares,” Bakoyannis said.
