Homeless cats and dogs in the Greek capital will finally receive the protection and care that they need
“The Shelter of Socrates”, a modern shelter for stray cats and dogs, will soon open in the neighbourhood of Votakinos in Athens. According to a press release by the municipality, the establishment has been named after one of the city’s most loved stray dogs who recently lost his life in a tragic accident.
Now, the city wants to ensure that all stray animals receive the safety and security that they deserve.
The new establishment will be able to house and care for approximately 90 animals. In addition to this, it will have a courtyard space where stray cats and dogs will be able to run and play freely. What makes this shelter particularly special is that it includes a “house room” with furniture.
This “house room” has been designed with the aim of familiarising stray cats and dogs with how a regular home looks and feels. In doing so, the shelter helps animals become comfortable and ready to move into a house when they are eventually adopted. Thus, it alleviates the anxiety they would otherwise feel, making the adoption process easier.
“The Shelter of Socrates” will employ people to look after the hygiene and socialisation of the animals. Moreover, the establishment will be guarded 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of the cats and dogs.
The Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis visited the shelter on the occasion of World Stray Animals Day. In a press release, he explained that such an establishment is absolutely crucial for a city that is modern and humane.
It is important to note that the construction of this shelter is just one of the many actions taken by the municipality to protect stray animals. To date, Athens reports that 490 animals have been adopted, 1,160 have been neutered and 2,014 have received medical care. Furthermore, the city is currently planning the installation of houses, feeders, and watering cans for strays.
The ultimate aim of “The Shelter of Socrates” is to help homeless animals find a new family that will love and care for them. For this reason, the municipality has launched www.animalscityofathens.gr so that citizens can more easily find a four-legged friend.
