Austria plans for 36 percent CO2 emissions reduction by 2030

Austria plans for 36 percent CO2 emissions reduction by 2030

Local and federal governments to cooperate in hitting the country’s emission reduction targets

By the end of the year the Austrian federal government must submit a clear and detailed plan for its approach to fighting climate change to the European Commission. Austria must reduce its CO2 emissions by 36% by 2030, in line with other EU-wide carbon-reduction policies. If the government is unable to produce a concise document by the end of the year and present it to the European Commission, it will face penalties totaling up to 10 billion euro. Because of the shrinking timetable, local and regional governments have been asked to assist with the planning and preparation of future actions against climate change.

Some of the steps that the federal government is taking in order to tackle the country’s carbon emissions are the introduction of a tax on businesses and enterprises emitting high amounts of CO2, tax incentives for those with eco-friendly business models and the elimination of subsidies for environmentally damaging businesses.

Additionally, regional governments will be receiving increased funding in order to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy and the expansion of environmentally friendly public transport. Over 200 events aimed at raising awareness for climate change and gathering policy proposals will also be held with the assistance of local governments and city councils.
