The secondary airport of the Romanian capital Bucharest has not operated in the last seven years. This week, on Monday, September 30, the director of the Bucharest Airports Company (CNAB), Alexandru George Ivan, signed a contract for the rehabilitation and refurbishment of the Baneasa airport building, worth over RON 55.5 million, equal of 11.7 million euros. The revamping project will be executed by the local companies Bog'Art Association and UTI Grup. The design timeframe is two months and the execution period - six months. "We are submitting these projects so that Baneasa Airport will be fully operational by the spring of 2020" announced CNAB director Alexandru Ivan.
In the past, before getting shut down, the airport was used mostly for domestic and low-cost flights. It is located in Baneasa district, 8,5 kilometers north of the city center. It was the only airport in the Romanian capital until 1969, when the Otopeni Airport (today Henri Coandă International Airport) was opened to civilians. According to the new plans, Baneasa airport should serve the planes bringing the football teams that will play in Bucharest at the UEFA Euro 2020 as well as their fans.
