La web municipal de Barcelona anunció el 20 de diciembre que se está trabajando en un nuevo proyecto, denominado Biobanc y destinado a la conservación de especies animales amenazadas, en línea con los objetivos de un nuevo modelo del Zoo de Barcelona. La iniciativa se basa en el tal llamado Frozen Zoo, un depósito de material biológico de animales (y plantas) almacenado a muy bajas temperaturas de -196 ° C, que existe en San Diego (EE. UU.) desde los años 1960.
La preservación del biomaterial genético de animales en peligro de extinción es un enfoque contemporáneo y más radical para la preservación y conservación de la biodiversidad. El material almacenado de esta manera puede durar casi indefinidamente y puede usarse para inseminación artificial, fertilización in vitro, transferencias de embriones e incluso clonación. En cierto modo, puede garantizar que no perdamos más especies animales al preservar su genoma original.
Además de la conservación, el proyecto tiene otros dos objetivos: facilitar la investigación genética y genómica de animales de una forma menos invasiva y más sostenible y homogeneizar eficientemente las muestras de tejidos y células para facilitar un uso responsable.
El proyecto nació con la intención de ser el equivalente europeo de la institución estadounidense Frozen Zoo, pionera en este campo desde su creación en la década de 1960, y reconocida mundialmente. Tiene la colección más grande del mundo de líneas celulares (alrededor de 10,000) y especies (más de 900).
El Biobanco tendrá dos sedes. Uno será en el Instituto de Biología Evolutiva (IBE) y el otro en la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Ya en 2003, la UAB inició la conservación de tejidos muertos de animales, que son de interés para el Zoo, para su uso en estudios de investigación. La nueva iniciativa pretende ser una continuación del espíritu de esa actividad.
