Butterfly bioblitzes will take place in Logroño

The dual event is organized to raise awareness about the beautiful insects in the area

The Logroño Department of Environment, together with ZERYNTHIA Association (The Spanish associate in the Butterfly Conservation Europe federation), is organizing two butterfly bioblitzes this Sunday, 9 August. These will take place in La Grajera Park and will be free of charge for anyone wishing to participate.

Bioblitzes have educational and conservation purposes

The Sunday event is called ‘Bioblitz Maratón Lepidopterológico’ (Butterfly Bioblitz Marathon) and will consist of two sessions – one of which will be conducted during the day between 10:30 and 13:30, and the other will be nocturnal, between 21:30 and midnight.

The events are free of charge, however, there is limited space. So, volunteers who want to take part in the search for butterflies are invited to sign up by sending an e-mail to zerynthia.org@gmail.com.

The meeting place and the area to be explored is La Grajera Park, which is located southwest of the city of Logroño and surrounds an artificial lake. The park covers 55 hectares of land, another 32 of water, and is often used for educational trips. It is considered the most accessible natural area for residents of the Riojan capital.

For those who are still wondering what a bioblitz is, here is the answer.

These are events which are organized with the purpose to search, explore and/or count specific animal or plant species in a defined area. These trips are led by science experts and they can be joined by members from the general public who would like to know more about the wildlife in their area of residence.

The aim is to help people discover species that they would not normally encounter and to raise awareness about the ecosystem richness of urban areas. These small expeditions can also generate valuable scientific data, such as tracking the population density of specific animals.
