A principios de esta semana, la Generalitat de Catalunya dio señales de querer hacerse cargo de convertir a la región en uno de los líderes mundiales en el desarrollo de la futura tecnología 6G. Para ello, se elaborará un plan estratégico y se presentará a las autoridades para su aprobación antes del 30 de junio de 2022.
La humanidad todavía se está adaptando a la idea y la difusión de la tecnología 5G. Sin embargo, los científicos y los formuladores de políticas con visión de futuro ya están marcando el camino para el surgimiento de la próxima ola de comunicaciones, servicios digitales y consolidaciones tecnológicas que se espera que azote al mundo.
En términos más simples, la tecnología 6G tendrá que ver con la convergencia entre la comunicación móvil y la Inteligencia Artificial (IA).
Gracias al salto en el rendimiento de las redes de telecomunicaciones (de Gigabits a Terabits) que se espera que entreguen los sistemas 6G y mejorando el tiempo de respuesta en el orden de los milisegundos. 6G permitirá nuevas aplicaciones críticas, como la automatización en tiempo real y la realidad extendida.
También podremos traer todos los objetos físicos al mundo digital mediante la creación de gemelos digitales (como avatares) que permitan monitorearlos y rastrearlos en tiempo real. De esta forma, será la primera tecnología que integrará eficientemente los mundos físico y digital con la capacidad de interactuar con los seres humanos.
Además, la tecnología 6G está alineada con los objetivos globales de desarrollo sostenible (ODS) y tiene un claro enfoque centrado en el ser humano. Esto lo posiciona como el vehículo de la Internet de los Sentidos, ya que permite la fusión entre el entorno de la comunicación y los sentidos humanos. Su objetivo es mejorar los entornos escalables de realidad virtual inmersiva y la comunicación holográfica para hacerlos cada vez más realistas.
En este contexto, el Plan de la Generalitat de Cataluña (liderado por el Departamento de la Vicepresidencia y Políticas Digitales y Territoriales) deberá hacer un relevamiento de las capacidades de I+D disponibles en 5G y 6G en el territorio.
También definirá áreas estratégicas de investigación a priorizar, políticas públicas para apoyar la I+D 6G y un modelo de gobernanza para la coordinación del ecosistema de investigación 6G. Asimismo, señalará colaboraciones internacionales con iniciativas para impulsar la investigación 6G a nivel europeo.
