El primer día escolar está a la vuelta de la esquina y las administraciones de toda Europa se esfuerzan por organizar el regreso anual a las aulas en estos tiempos inusuales. Aparte de eso, La Generalitat de Catalunya también se preocupa por la buena alimentación de los jóvenes. Por eso ha anunciado dos planes, con un presupuesto conjunto de casi 4 millones de euros, que abastecerán de fruta fresca, verdura y leche a los comedores escolares.
El presupuesto que se ha aprobado se repartirá de la siguiente manera: casi 2,4 millones de euros se destinarán al suministro de frutas y verduras frescas a las escuelas y otros 1,4 millones de euros se destinarán a la obtención de leche. Este dinero también incluye fondos para la promoción del consumo de estos productos, frente a los refrescos y la comida chatarra.
Quizás resulte irónico que los países donde se originó la cocina mediterránea, tan famosa por sus beneficios para la salud, estén experimentando las peores tasas de obesidad infantil en el continente. Es por eso que el Gobierno autonómico quiere revertir esta tendencia negativa y reintroducir como hábito el consumo habitual de productos frescos.
Se espera que los planes aprovisionados proporcionen a 300 000 niños al menos 18 porciones de frutas y verduras y 12 litros de leche entera UHT a cada estudiante durante todo el año escolar. La medida abarcará alrededor de 1300 escuelas de Cataluña y está dirigida a niños de entre 3 y 12 años, ya que los primeros años se consideran imprescindibles para el desarrollo de hábitos adecuados, así como para la ingesta de nutrientes para un buen crecimiento.
Estos planes existen desde hace 12 años y gozan de una amplia aceptación y se cree que están dando resultados satisfactorios. También cuentan con el apoyo de la Comisión Europea. En cuanto a toda la comida que no se pudo utilizar a principios de este año debido al cese de las actividades escolares, fue donada a la organización Banco de Alimentos.
