Le Jour du culte consacré à tous les Saints commence à minuit et se termine à la fin du 1er Novembre
Dès le 4ème siècle l’église Syrienne consacrait un jour à honorer tous les martyrs. Dans un effort pour christianiser les traditions païennes, le pape Boniface IV transformait un temple romain dédié à tous les dieux, le Panthéon, en une église consacrée à tous les saints. Cette coutume se répandit en Occident, mais chaque Eglise locale les fêtait à des dates différentes. Depuis le 8ème siècle la fête de Toussaint devenait officielle pour les catholiques et c’est le pape Grégoire III qui a retenu le jour du 1 Novembre comme date de la Toussaint, lorsqu’il consacre une chapelle de la Basilique Saint-Pierre de Rome à tous les saints. Le jour veut honorer tous les saints connus et inconnus et les morts, d’où son nom. Les saints sont la personnification de l’Esprit Saint, leurs vies et leurs actions sont remplis de bonté, de foi et de souci de l’humanité, ce qui explique leur reconnaissance en tant que saints, même si ce n’est pas toujours officiellement.
Ainsi à l’occasion de la Toussaint le 1er Novembre est férié en France, Belgique, Allemagne (états majoritairement catholiques), Autriche, Hongrie, Croatie, Italie, Lituanie, Pologne, Slovaquie, Slovénie, Espagne, au Portugal au Luxembourg. La Finlande et la Suède célèbrent la fête le 3 Novembre (Samedi), le Pays-Bas - le 4 Novembre (Dimanche). Le Royaume Uni célèbre Halloween (All Hollows day) le 31 Octobre.
