Mrs Apprendino, what are the biggest challenges in your everyday work as a mayor of Turin?
My biggest challenge is to improve the beautiful City of Torino and make it grow, with all the difficulties every local administrator has to face. As a young woman, I must always do more than men to prove myself. However, things are slightly changing. The Torino local government has a high number of female councillors, selected for their skills and not because of legal quotas.
What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in their work?
I would recommend them to study a lot and commit themselves completely, pursuing their goals and sharing challenges. I would suggest them not to compare themselves to others and always stay focused.
What is important to me are close relationships, my family, my friends, people I love. Sometimes it’s hard to separate work and family life but it’s the best gift you can give yourself and those around you.
How do you celebrate the Woman's day?
The 3rd of March I joined the “Just the Woman I Am” run, a race across the city attended every year by thousands of competitors running to raise money for scientific research. I hope you will join the race next year!
