Cyprus launches new portal showing the spread of COVID-19

The interactive website tracks infections as they are reported by national authorities

With citizens more and more hungry for information regarding the coronavirus and its spread, researchers, scientists and media outlets are eager to provide them with what they need.

Last week in Cyprus, The University of Cyprus’ KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence inaugurated the country’s first interactive portal that tracks the spread of COVID-19 and displays information about the hotspots around the island.

Innovative measures aimed at saving lives

The website hosts a map of the entire island of Cyprus with infections displayed by red dots scaling in terms of their number in the specific area. In order to protect the personal data of citizens in those areas, the names and numbers of streets where said dots are displayed are not given – rather they use postal codes to give an account of how many cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the area.

The website’s other main feature is that provides additional supplementary information, including how many people have been tested in different areas of the country, how many of the previously active cases have been cured, how many deaths from COVID-19 have been registered, and others.

To ensure the reliability of the data, researchers from The University of Cyprus’ KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence update the portal every four hours with new information not only acquired from by the Cypriot Health Ministry’s cases management system but also by contacting the country’s 1420 coronavirus emergency hotline and various clinics and labs.

Through such reliable initiatives, citizens can keep themselves informed and aware of the potential dangers of coronavirus near their own homes, without relying on the fake news and disinformation that have become so widespread over the past few weeks.
