Dublin has a district for smart city solutions

Forecasting bike movements, developing evidence-based strategies for air-pollution and revolutionising rainfall and water monitoring are only part of the projects deployed

The capital of Ireland is renowned for its intelligent approach to technological, environmental, tourist and social progress. Not only does it have a concrete vision for turning Dublin into a smart city, but it also has a concrete plan and is putting the means into its realization. As one of many steps, naturally comes the testbed for smart solutions. The so-called Smart Docklands District, with its significant number of newly constructed buildings, global technological companies and variable options for connectivity, provides a unique platform for innovators and entrepreneurs to develop new and innovative solutions. Beyond 40 000 people work and 26 000 people live in the business district, which has been acknowledged by the Trinity College and the City Council of Dublin as suitable for hosting the Smart Docklands initiative.

The initiative thus connects various interest groups, which together shall discuss ways to solve common local challenges by the means of innovative solutions, with the objective of turning the place into “the world’s most connected business and living district.” To give an insight into the ongoing and successfully completed projects, here are some examples:

  • Forecasting Bike Movements with IBM aims to help city planners in promoting sustainable commuting and forecasting the seasonal and abnormal bicycle movements around the city;
  • iSCAPE wants to develop an integrated strategy for air pollution control, that is grounded on evidence-based analysis;
  • Low Cost Rainfall Sensors, initiated to revolutionise rainfall and water level monitoring around the city, to make it a safer place for citizens and visitors alike.
