European Partnerships, the key implementation tool of the programme Horizon Europe 2021-2027, is receiving new investment from the European Commission
European Partnerships is receiving 10 billion euros from the European Commission as part of the new EU research and innovation programme Horizon Europe (2021-2027). This is a tool supporting the European Commission and private and/or public partners in addressing European-related issues through various initiatives. The new partnership will accelerate the development of innovative solutions across different sectors. Transition towards a green, climate neutral and digital Europe will make the continental industry more resilient and competitive.
The role of European Partnerships is to improve the preparedness and response of the EU regarding health, technology, climate, energy, aircraft and airspace, rail systems, digital tools, and metrology. In addition to this, the new setup will prepare for response against infectious diseases, develop efficient low-carbon aircrafts for clean aviation, support the use of renewable biological raw materials in energy production, ensure European leadership in digital technologies and infrastructures, and make rail transport more competitive.
The 10 European Partnerships, which focus on issues that need urgent efforts, were proposed to contribute to a greener and more digital Europe. These are the following: Global Health EDCTP3, Innovative Health Initiative, Key Digital Technologies, Circular Bio-based Europe, Clean Hydrogen, Clean Aviation, Europe's Rail, Single European Sky ATM Research 3, Smart Networks and Services, Metrology.
“The challenge of the coronavirus pandemic added urgency to our long-standing endeavours to better use research and innovation to tackle health emergencies, climate change and digital transformation. European Partnerships are our opportunity to work together to respond and shape the profound economic and social transformations, for the benefit of all EU citizens,” said Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, as quoted on the website of the European Commission.
Further, Members of the Commission College underlined the importance of this transformation and the opportunity to work together ‘to respond and shape the profound economic and social transformations’. Investing in innovation and modern green and digital transitions are at the centre of the programme, explained the European Commissioners.
The next step that will come is the adoption of the Regulation that will establish joint undertakings by the Council of the European Union.
