La Fondazione di Venezia, la organizzazione bancaria che investe in cultura, istruzione e ricerca a Venezia, ha recentemente inaugurato M9, un sito di 110 milioni di euro che ospita il primo museo digitale italiano ed è stato soprannominato come "micro città intelligente". Situato nel distretto di terraferma di Mestre, l'obiettivo di M9 è di stimolare la rigenerazione urbana nell'area. Oltre al museo, il complesso di 10.000 metri quadrati comprende sette edifici, tra cui un ex-convento del XVI secolo, una vecchia fabbrica e nuove costruzioni. Dispone inoltre di un centro commerciale e di un auditorium con tecnologia video 4K. Alimentato e riscaldato da 276 pannelli solari e 63 tubi geotermici, è stato certificato LEED Gold per la sua sostenibilità.
Mestre ha urgente bisogno di investimenti, perché la popolazione del centro storico di Venezia è crollata da 190.000 dopo la seconda guerra mondiale a 55.000, in quanto i residenti fuggono da un numero record di turisti che saturano il centro e fanno salire i prezzi delle proprietà e degli affitti. L'aumento dei livelli idrici rappresenta una sfida aggiuntiva, come dimostrato lo scorso ottobre, quando le peggiori alluvioni di un decennio hanno devastato il centro della città. Mestre, d'altra parte, è mal strutturata e ha pochi punti di riferimento importanti. Il museo digitale, uno dei primi nel suo genere, potrebbe mettere Mestre sulla mappa. Interamente privo di oggetto, racconta la storia italiana del XX secolo attraverso documenti d'archivio, immagini, dati e filmati visualizzati con schermi interattivi e ologrammi.
Secondo Luigi Brugnaro, Sindaco di Venezia: "Fino ad ora, Mestre è stato un dormitorio per i turisti in visita a Venezia, con questo museo, invitiamo il mondo a scoprire sia la nostra storia che la nostra modernità.” Le applicazioni di smart city ospitate in 3tre “isole digitali" all'aperto servono a migliorare l'esperienza dei visitatori.
