Paceville and Marsa are targeted for the new measure, but not before serious privacy issues are resolved
A new surveillance scheme is going to be implemented at local level in Malta. Paceville and Marsa are detected as “anti social hotspots” and therefore they will be the first to be provided with intelligent CCTV cameras by the end of 2019. The initiative is driven by Safe City Malta and is under consideration since 2016 when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Maltese government and the Chinese technological giant Huawei who will invest more than 1.5 million euro in the Safe City project and other initiatives, supporting the technological advancement of Malta.
The smart video surveillance systems are capable of detecting, tracking and recognizing faces, vehicles and objects. The new technology of surveillance is generally used to prevent and detect crime, but raises serious privacy concerns, as well. The data protection concerns are to be resolved first, and only then could the two settlements start implementing the new technology. For the moment it is unclear also which public body will be in charge of the new technology.
