Former shipyard becomes an attractive quarter in Bremerhaven

Creating a climate neutral space for living, working and leisure

The city of Bremerhaven in the state of Bremen, Germany will turn an old shipyard into an attractive quarter. The site with the industrial charm is intended to be a stepping stone into the future for the port city.

The aim is to create a quarter with a modern look that will keep the rich history of the region. According to the plans of the city of Bremerhaven and private developers, more than 110-hectare region will not only become a new neighbourhood in the next 15 years but will transform into the centre of a growing city.

Combining green spaces, working, and living areas

The shipyard quarter with its buildings which are worth preserving as being under protection will be characterised by a combination of water, green spaces, living, working, research and leisure.

More than 6000 people should live there once the project is completed. Furthermore, companies with thousands of jobs should settle there according to the city. "What is being created here is a quarter of the future with a completely new mobility behavior," shared Bremerhaven's Lord Mayor Melf Grantz.

A flexible and digitised public transport, as well as an expansion of bicycle and pedestrian traffic "in modern form", are being planned. In this way, the quarter will be easily reached from other parts of the city.

According to the Town Hall, a marina, a research port and a zone for leisure activities are to be built in the new quarter. Extensive green areas for recreation will be combined with nearby daycare centers, schools and cultural institutions. The green spaces will connect the individual residential and development zones.

In line with the aim of the project, primarily attractive yet affordable apartments are to be created. The views from the window will look out either to the water or towards the green area. The quarter should also become climate neutral.
