La Capital Europea de la Navidad es un premio relativamente nuevo pero prestigioso patrocinado por el Parlamento Europeo, y sus galardonados más recientes son: Génova (Italia) y San Sebastián / Donostia (España). La decisión se tomó ayer en Madrid, donde se reunió el jurado internacional del certamen, presidido por José María Gil Robles, expresidente del Parlamento Europeo.
El jurado expresó su gran reconocimiento "por el alto nivel técnico de los proyectos presentados, por las propuestas y el compromiso por perseguir los valores europeos de la Navidad, un momento de especial trascendencia en el que se destacan los profundos valores de integración, tolerancia, convivencia y paz que son en el centro y en el origen del proyecto europeo se revelan”.
En ese sentido, las autoridades de la UE buscan establecer un paralelismo entre los valores europeos y navideños y, de hecho, es fácil ver cómo se superponen.
Los gobiernos de las dos ciudades también se alegraron de recibir el reconocimiento.
Laura Gaggero, concejala genovesa de Turismo, comentó que la ciudad tiene una fuerte tradición en la decoración de belenes y que el galardón contribuirá a que sea un destino turístico durante todo el año.
Por su parte, Marisol Garmendia, Consejera de Impulso Económico de San Sebastián/Donostia ha afirmado: “Esta distinción llega tras el trabajo de los últimos años para crear una Navidad diferente para San Sebastián: solidaria, inclusiva, innovadora, original y solidaria de sectores económicos locales como el comercio y hospitalidad. Es un reconocimiento que se utilizará para promocionar la ciudad en Navidad y posicionarla como destino turístico. Además, nos da acceso a la Red de ciudades navideñas europeas con las que podemos intercambiar experiencias, conocimientos, etc.”
El jurado añadió en su declaración: “Promover un destino como la Capital Europea de la Navidad es promover la paz, la convivencia y la armonía. Un poderoso elemento de integración y conocimiento de los valores europeos entre sus ciudadanos”.
