It will include creating a media library available online for visitors
Quedlinburg (Germany) is getting 61,000 euros for the establishment of a digitalised media library. It would be available online by mid-May, at the latest. This new project would help more people in the future appreciate the Quedlinburg collegiate church St. Servatii and the cathedral treasure housed there.
The cathedral treasure and the collegiate church of St. Servatii, which, along with the Quedlinburg old town and castle, have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. They are visited by approximately 90,000 visitors per year and now, thanks to the new digitalisation efforts of the city, people can have access.
The Quedlinburg monastery and cathedral treasure can be visited through a website that includes audio and text functions such as multiple languages, a sign language interpreter, a reading function, and subtitles.
Economics Minister Professor Dr Armin Willingmann commented on the project: “Quedlinburg is one of the cultural-historical and tourist figureheads in Saxony-Anhalt and all of Germany. With a view to the dramatic situation in the tourism industry in times of corona pandemic, it is all the more important to tap into these visitor magnets digitally. And finally, the 'digital treasures' are also available as a pilot project for Saxony-Anhalt in matters of inclusion and digital communication."
With the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, the "digital treasures" will provide many people, especially those with disabilities digital access to world-class culture.
The curator Elmar Egner from the Evangelical Church Community Quedlinburg emphasised: “I hope that this project will, among other things, break down barriers for a broader, modern perception of things, processes, works and people around the cathedral treasure. The cathedral treasure in Quedlinburg is a strong cultural heritage that involves commitment. There is a lot to report about that too. We want to tell enough so that nothing is missing for those interested.”
