La primera planta piloto bioelectroquímica totalmente automatizada para la producción neutra en carbono a partir de dióxido de carbono (CO2) ya está operativa en la ciudad española de Girona. La planta es un proyecto piloto (BioRECO2VER) ubicado en el Parque Científico de la Universidad de Girona, tras ganar un concurso público celebrado en 2021.
Las emisiones de CO2 acaban mayoritariamente en la atmósfera donde contribuyen progresivamente al aumento de la temperatura de la Tierra debido al efecto invernadero. Sin embargo, la mayoría de nosotros también sabemos que el CO2 es una fuente importante para la fotosíntesis de las plantas. Resulta que las bacterias también se pueden emplear en la conversión y transformación de ese gas en productos industriales utilizables, como el lactato y el isobuteno.
Con este fin, se investigará un proceso enzimático híbrido para la captura de CO2 de fuentes puntuales industriales y la conversión del CO2 capturado en productos finales específicos se realizará a través de tres plataformas microbianas patentadas diferentes que son representativas de una gama mucho más amplia de productos y aplicaciones.
El desarrollo y optimización de bioprocesos ocurrirá a lo largo de dos líneas: fermentación y sistemas bioelectroquímicos. El proceso en sí, sin embargo, ha sido descrito como no fotosintético.
El objetivo del proyecto es crear procesos alternativos para la producción a escala comercial de productos químicos de plataforma de una manera más sostenible a partir de las emisiones industriales de CO2. Sin embargo, aún existe la necesidad de superar algunas barreras técnicas y económicas, que sufren los procesos biotecnológicos para la conversión de CO2.
Por nombrar algunos: los costos de pretratamiento de gas aún son demasiado altos, la transferencia de gas en los biorreactores es subóptima, los costos de recuperación del producto aún son demasiado elevados y la escalabilidad no se ha probado suficientemente. La creación de la planta es el camino a seguir para demostrar que estos desafíos se pueden resolver y que todo el proceso se puede escalar con éxito.
