Glasgow with action plan for Social Enterprises

Glasgow with action plan for Social Enterprises

The first phase of Glasgow’s Social Enterprises Strategy has begun

Glasgow’s Social Enterprises Strategy was developed through the joint efforts of the Glasgow City Council and the Glasgow Social Enterprises Network. The main goal of the Strategy is to allow the social enterprises sector to grow and develop and thus improve the city as a whole.

Susan Aitken, leader of the Glasgow City Council stated: "Glasgow has almost 750 social enterprises with a net worth of £1.6bn and generating almost £800m. Until now we haven't truly appreciated the potential of the social economy, its valuable community role, capacity to regenerate and revitalise parts of the city and how it connects to the wider economy. That is why we have co-produced with the sector Glasgow's first social enterprise strategy, aimed at building on the phenomenal growth in this area and helping it realise the market opportunities out there.”

Members of the city council believe that by helping the sector, it will become easier for social enterprises to compete for larger contracts, enlarge their businesses and achieve higher growth. The role of social enterprises to the overall economy and even spirt of Glasgow can not be understated. The local government wants to reinforce the image of the city as the social enterprise capital of Scotland and wants to demonstrate the great benefits that such businesses bring to every citizen of the city. Social enterprises are of great assistance to any local government as they are instrumental in tackling many issues plaguing every municipality – environmental protection, poverty, homelessness, childcare.
