Helsinki opens education hub to promote EdTech innovation

The inauguration ceremony will take place virtually on 23 September

In recent years, the world has witnessed a significant rise in the number of EdTech start-ups. Now, the Finnish City of Helsinki revealed that it seeks to promote entrepreneurship in educational technology and become the capital of learning. To achieve this goal, the city will officially inaugurate a new hub for innovation – the Helsinki Education Hub – on Thursday, 23 September.

According to the hub’s website, it is the first centre in the world to combine learning and EdTech start-ups with Finnish pedagogic competence, innovative learning, and academic research. In combining these, the Helsinki Education Hub aims to generate innovation and promote the growth of entrepreneurship.

Incubator programmes

The hub will offer start-up teams and companies the opportunity to participate in incubator programmes. In fact, applications for the first such programme (EdTech incubator) will open on 23 September and close on 20 October.

Under this incubator programme, 10 teams or companies will receive guidance, counselling and coaching in the subjects of marketing, sales, finance, and networking. In the future, the programme will increase its capacity to 20 teams/companies. Mia-Stiina Heikkala, the leader of the Helsinki Education Hub project, commented:

“The City of Helsinki is a pioneer in dynamic cooperation between the public and private sectors. For many years, Helsinki has invested in current and potential growth areas such as gaming, XR and blockchain, AI and health, and climate solutions. The Helsinki Education Hub is a concrete example of the City of Helsinki's support and investment in promoting growing entrepreneurship in learning and education technology.”

Creating a community

According to a press release by the Finnish capital, the hub will undoubtedly result in the creation of an EdTech community for start-ups, researchers, and education professionals. That is, it will allow individuals to attend both physical and virtual events such as webinars, workshops, and lectures. There, they will get the chance to meet stakeholders and other members of the EdTech community.

The hub’s opening ceremony will take place online on 23 September from 15:00 to 16:30 in English. Those interested in attending must register via educationhubhelsinki.fi.
