Hungarian local authorities warn against telephone fraud

With a scrapbook scenario, fraudsters take away the savings of elderly people

Local authorities in the Hungarian city of Törökbálint warn about smart phone fraudsters who slay older people on a well-worked scenario. They usually call the phone on behalf of their relative, most often their grandson, reporting an accident or damage in a road accident. To resolve the problem, it is necessary to provide a certain amount of money or valuables. The most common scenarios:

  • The victim's grandson has caused an accident and must pay for the damage caused;
  • The grandson has taken a loan that urgently needs to be returned;
  • The relative is in distress or abducted and needs money to be released.

In addition, fraudsters usually study the background of the family and can provide credible information to gain confidence and convince the victim.

Police are calling on society to be particularly careful about this type of crime and to take action if such a call is received. In such cases, its credibility should be immediately verified by contacting the person alleged to have been in trouble. Victims must immediately call the police, must not to open to strangers or to transfer money.
