Hungary and Slovakia set up cross-border bike-sharing system

KOMBIbike is the cusp of cooperation of 9 towns using EU funds

KOMBIbike, a cross-border bike-sharing system established by four settlements in Hungary and five in Slovakia with European Union funding was inaugurated on Wednesday in Tata, northern Hungary, Daily News Hungary reports.  

The joint system is the product of cooperation between the Hungarian cities of Komárom, Tata, Kisbér and Oroszlány and the Slovakian towns of Komarno, Hurbanovo, Nesvady, Kolarovo and Nové Zámky. 85 percent of the cost of the project worth EUR 980,000 has been covered by the European Regional Development Fund.

Renting and returning made easy

The new eco-friendly system for cross-city mobility has been developed by T-Systems Magyarország and the bicycles have been provided by the leading Hungarian bicycle manufacturer Neuzer. A total of 95 conventional and 35 electric bicycles can be rented at one of 13 collection stations and then handed over at any other station. A map helps users find the station that is closest to them as well as others along their route.  

Flexible ticket options

Users can choose from daily, 3-day or weekly ticket, and regular users are advised to purchase a monthly, semi-annual or annual pass. Seasonal passes will also be available soon.

The renting of bikes is done via a KOMBIbike card - plastic card with a unique ID. A user can hold a maximum of 3 cards allowing for renting of 3 bikes at a time for family or guests.

The maximum rental period of a bike can be 10 hours at a time. If the rented bike is not returned to any of the parking stations within 10 hours, it will be declared missing and will be searched for.
