Irish local communities join forces for the National Spring Clean 2019

Irish local communities join forces for the National Spring Clean 2019

The oldest campaign of its kind will make Ireland a cleaner place after one month of joint efforts

The month of April in Ireland will be dedicated to cleaner and litter-free environment. Throughout a whole month, the National Spring Clean campaign will be taking place in order to encourage local communities from across the country to tackle the issue of litter and to demonstrate the benefits of a litter-free environment. The campaign is claimed to be the biggest and the oldest similar campaign, running for 21 years now. Organized by An Taisce and sponsored by the Wrigley Company, it is firmly supported by the local authorities, who assist communities in the coordination of clean-up activities within their counties.

For more than two centuries the National Spring Clean has been aiming to foster a feeling of shared collective responsibility regarding the problem with littering and preventing its increase. By getting involved in collective clean-ups, groups and individuals of all ages have the chance to make a meaningful and positive contribution to their own communities.

As means to facilitate the volunteers, all clean up groups registering with An Taisce for the National Spring Clean campaign receive a free clean-up kit which includes info materials, posters, colour coded refuse sacks for segregation of waste materials, protective gloves and high-vis vests. What is more, groups registered to participate with National Spring Clean are covered under a public liability insurance policy while engaged in clean-up activities for the duration of the campaign.

Offaly County Council will collect any bags collected by groups. Contact the Environment Department on 057 9357403 or email Environment@offalycoco.ie to arrange.
