L'albero di Natale più grande del mondo si accende ogni anno alle spalle del Monte Ingino, che quarda verso la città medievale di Gubbio in Umbria. Per celebrare le festività invernali, la bellissima città illumina il suo magico albero di Natale con più di 700 luci.
Sormontato da una stella gigante, l'albero è alto 750 metri. Ci sono 8,5 km di cavi che alimentano le luci dell'enorme albero.
Le 'radici' dell'albero partono nei pressi delle antiche mura di Gubbio mentre la sua stella arriva fino alla basilica del patrono del paese Sant'Ubaldo, sulla vetta del monte Ingino. Lo splendido albero di Natale è entrato nel libro dei Guinness dei Primati nel 1991.
Quest'anno le luci dell'albero sono state nuovamente illuminate grazie alla campagna annuale che invitava le persone ad "adottare" una luce. Ciascuna delle luci dell'albero è stata sponsorizzata dalla gente che dedica una luce ai propri cari, con messaggi che vanno dall'accoglienza del neonato al saluto ai nonni tanto mancati.
Le luci sono state adottate con un importo simbolico di 10 euro ciascuna e sono state disponibili fino ad esaurimento. Ogni luce è stata adottata da un singolo utente.
Nel 2020, il più grande albero di Natale del mondo compie 40 anni. Per celebrare l'evento verrà presentato un film documentario che celebra questo gesto di devozione del popolo di Gubbio, divenuto ormai una vera e propria icona del Natale in tutto il mondo. “ALBERAIOLI” sarà trasmesso sul Facebook dell'albero di Natale -sabato 5 dicembre alle ore 18.00.
La città di Gubbio di solito organizza una cerimonia ufficiale per accendere le sue luci natalizie, ma quest'anno è stata annullata a causa della pandemia COVID-19 in corso. L'albero di Natale rimarrà acceso fino a gennaio 2021.
