An E-Waste repair day is organized in Malta under the slogan “Repair if you care”

The Ministry of the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change of Malta has organized an environmental initiative entitled “Repair if you care”. A community repair event took place in Valetta for three hours on the 13th of October.  Its objective is to bring about conscientious use and storage of electric and electronic devices, which are being proliferating in households at particularly high rates. An international E-Waste Days campaign, of which the Maltese event is partnering, estimates that 50 million tonnes of e-waste will be generated in 2018 and more than 80% of them will be stored irresponsibly.

The focus of the educative event were the topics of repairing usable goods, extending their lifespan, recycling and repurposing electronic equipment, which require substantial behavioural and attitude change.

The initiative is part of a comprehensive policy at national and local level, aimed at reducing and recycling waste. It comes alongside the recently introduced scheme of separation of organic waste, which aims to reduce dramatically the volume of non-recyclable waste.
