Kolding receives green light to begin construction of Marina City

The vision for Marina City is a sustainable urban district with attractive facilities and services

On 7 July, the Coastal Directorate approved Kolding’s construction plans for Marina City: a sustainable urban district with modern residential areas and maritime services. Together with Kolding Harbour and Kolding Marina, the municipality seeks to establish Denmark’s most attractive marina and create new experiences for the city’s residents.

What will Marina City feature?

The new district will feature a harbour promenade, various cafes, clubhouses, and maritime businesses. What is more, the municipality envisions the creation of a water sports centre, new beach park, accommodation, and several other activities associate with the marina. In addition to this, Marina City will also be the home of approximately 1,000 berths and 29 modern houseboats.

With the construction permit obtained from the Coastal Directorate, the municipality has received the green light to begin working on the establishment of the district. Mayor of Kolding Jørn Pedersen expressed his satisfaction with the permit, noting: “I am super happy that we have now received the long-awaited construction permit from the Coastal Directorate.

With it, we have come a decisive step closer to being able to realise our vision of a new sustainable district with attractive residential and port environments as well as a new large marina on the south side of Kolding Fjord.”

Nevertheless, it is important to highlight that the municipality is yet to receive approval from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency as the development of the Marina City requires geotechnical investigations of and interference with the bottom of the Marina’s fjord.

In a press release, the municipality explains that while it awaits the approval and issuance of this final permit, several tasks will be undertaken. These include the expansion of the harbour basin, the establishment of quay facilities, and the construction of a new beach.
