The Slovenian city is investing millions of euros to upgrade its cycling infrastructure
The Slovenian city of Kranj will be investing over 2 million euros in the improvement of its cycling infrastructure over the following months. The investment is co-financed by the Slovenian state budget and by the European Regional Development fund and will cover upgrades to 8.8 km of cycling paths and public lighting, landscaping as well as the establishment of a Sustainable Mobility Centre. The ultimate goal of the local administration is for Kranj to become the leading sustainable urban centre in the region.
According to the mayor of Kranj Matjaž Rakovec “The implementation of the project will create better conditions for safer cycling, reduce the negative environmental impacts and improve the quality of life of our citizens.”. Furthermore he believes the next vital step in improving the city’s cycling infrastructure is to connect Kranj with other settlements in the Gorenjska region via cycling paths, thus ensuring the opportunity for everyone to lead more active and sustainable ways of life.
The construction and improvement efforts of the paths are scheduled to be completed by February 2020, while the Sustainable Mobility Centre is expected to open its doors in June of the same year.
