Depuis la semaine dernière, les chats errants à Louvain se sentiront un peu plus à l'aise dans le froid. Cela a été rendu possible grâce au placement de 22 abris destinés aux chats errants, installés sur tout le territoire de la ville, a annoncé la municipalité. Les emplacements ont été sélectionnés en fonction des endroits où résident souvent les chats errants et chacun des abris peut accueillir jusqu'à quatre chats.

Par mauvais temps ou par temps froid, il est important que les chats errants puissent rester dans un loft isolé et sans courant d'air. Les abris donc bénéficieront certainement au bien-être des chats, expliquent les représentants de la Ville. En outre, comme l'a expliqué Thomas Van Oppens, responsable du bien-être animal, pour le portail municipal, leur coût était nettement inférieur à ce qu'il pourrait être. Selon lui, l'alternative choisie fournit au moins 87% d'économie à une qualité acceptable, comparé au model du gouvernement Flamand.
La Ville belge s'est engagée à s'attaquer aux problèmes causés par les chats errants d'une manière respectueuse des animaux. Pour cela, les autorités de Louvain travaillent en étroite collaboration avec une organisation à but non lucratif locale qui capture les chats errants et les stérilise. Ensuite, ils relâchent les chats errants - qui sont souvent timides et n'ont donc aucune chance d'être adoptés - dans leur environnement extérieur familier. Grâce à cette coopération, la population de chats errants reste sous contrôle et cause moins de problèmes.
Enfin, les autorités de la ville demandent aux habitants de ne pas interagir avec les chats et déconseillent de s'approcher des cages, d'amener d'autres chats dans les abris ou de ramener des chats errants à la maison. En effet, les chats errants qui n'ont pas été adoptés sont plutôt timides et ne peuvent pas s'habituer à vivre dans une maison. De plus, les animaux ne doivent pas être nourris par les citoyens car il y a déjà des volontaires à la police qui le font. Actuellement, le processus n'est pas formalisé, mais une fois que cela se règle, d’autres personnes peuvent s'inscrire comme volontaires pour nourrir les chats, explique Thomas Van Oppens.
