The winners of Limerick Edge/Embrace Photography Competition were announced on Monday. Tony Clancy won in the professional category and Natalia Sobiecka was singled out in the amateur category of the competition, which had been launched to promote the new brand Limerick: Atlantic Edge, European Embrace.
As Limerick.ie reported, seasoned and aspiring photographers were asked to capture the beautiful contradictions of Limerick’s distinctive character. The professional jury faced an uneasy task of sifting the 376 entries through, leaving seven finalists in the professional category and 14 in the amateur category.
The shortlisted photographs were voted on by the public on the Facebook page of Limerick City and County council where 10 000 votes in total were cast. Tony’s striking image Embrace the Wilderness, captured at Curraghchase Camping Park, emerged as the clear winner, scooping 35 per cent of votes cast in the professional category.
The amateur category saw a tighter contest, but Natalia’s photograph of the tranquil River Shannon mirroring the Limerick skyline, won in the long run with 21 per cent of the votes. Some people went as far as comparing the contrails of a plane in the sky of the winning image and their reflections in the water to the angled lines of the ‘K’ from the Limerick brand.
Natalia’s prize was a EUR 1000 voucher for a photography shop while Tony’s triumph in the professional category secured him a month long billboard display in Limerick City.
Congratulating the winners, the Head of Marketing & Communications at Limerick City and County Council Laura Ryan said that their stunning photographs captured a different slice of Limerick, each one in their own way. She expressed her satisfaction that the competition got an enthusiastic response as evidenced by the number of entries and the contribution of the voters.
