Ljubljana’s Open Kitchen goes green

Ljubljana’s Open Kitchen goes green

The annual event is scheduled to open on 20 March, as it does not currently fall under the government’s ban on mass gatherings

One of Ljubljana’s most highly anticipated annual events is scheduled to open on the advent of Spring – 20 March 2020. The traditional Ljubljana Open Kitchen will stand ready to meet locals and tourists alike with a brand new environmentally friendly approach.

Currently, the Open Kitchen is still scheduled to go ahead, despite the Slovenian government’s attempts to limit the spread of the coronavirus by banning mass gatherings of people. As of right now, the ban that is in effect on the country’s territory prohibits only the carrying out of mass in-door events, hosting more than 500 guests.

Open Kitchen with a new green approach

The 2020 edition of the Ljubljana Open Kitchen will introduce a very important and timely change to how it provides and distributes food to its visitors. Namely, it will dispose of all plastics on its premises and instead use only biodegradable and environmentally friendly products that will reduce pollution within the city and contribute to its sustainability and climate change efforts.

The Ljubljana Open Kitchen has been serving food only on biodegradable and reusable materials over the past couple of years. But this year, for the first time, organisers are expanding their green approach to drinks as well.

With the ban on plastics on the event’s premises in effect, the organisers are also encouraging visitors to bring their own reusable utensils – this will allow for the festival to take on an even greener and more environmentally conscious approach.

Another example of the Open Kitchen’s sustainability practices is the fact that the organisers never throw away perfectly edible leftovers. Instead, they gather it and donate it all those in need, thus helping solve two problems at the same time.
