The two-way portals connected the cities of Lublin and Vilnius as well as Dublin and New York have now become a network sending live stream images from all four cities. The change became possible thanks to a new rotation schedule that has been implemented to foster better interconnectivity and cultural expression in the digital age.
Yesterday, 26 August, saw the launch of the network, which previously only paired two cities on either end of the round portal screens. The cultural project began in 2021 in the two Eastern European cities, followed by another virtual connection across the Atlantic between Dublin and New York in 2023.
The network mode means that live streams will rotate on a three-minute basis between two cities during a specific 7-hour time period every day.
The network rotation is active daily from 1 pm to 8 pm in Dublin, 8 am to 3 pm in NYC, 2 pm to 9 pm in Lublin, and 3 pm to 10 pm in Vilnius. Outside of these hours, Vilnius and Lublin will maintain their two-way virtual link uninterrupted. Initially, the one between NYC and Dublin was also meant to be a 24-hour feed, however, uncivilized behaviour on the part of some Dubliners had the hours reduced.
The Vilnius Portal is situated adjacent to the city’s central station, while the Lublin Portal is located in Litewski Square, in the city centre. In Dublin, you can find the local Portal on North Earl St whereas in New York City, you will have to head to Flatiron South Plaza in Manhattan.
The idea behind the project was to create a communication platform for residents and visitors of the cities participating in the initiative.
More Portal locations will be added to the network later this year.
